“Stand Down” for Veterans Cape Cod is one day event where community and government partners provide services to Veterans (including homeless and at-risk veterans).
It includes food, health screenings, VA benefits counseling, and connections to housing, employment, treatment programs and supportive services. The concept originates from the military practice of allowing soldiers to rest and regroup after combat, and it now aims to provide a supportive environment where veterans can receive a range of assistance and a sense of community.
The Cape and Islands Veterans Outreach Center Stand Down includes many complimentary services: Haircuts, Reiki, Massage, Supply Depot and Lunch-all FREE!
Why is it Called “Stand Down”?
The term “stand down” comes from a military command that signals soldiers to go off duty or relax from a state of high readiness.
Just as in the military, the event allows veterans to pause their current struggle, receive the necessary resources, and have time to rest and regroup.

Our Goal is to make Stand Down a safe event, but as with anything, there are inherent risks involved:
- COVID-19 is still potentially dangerous, especially for those with other health issues. Our event is inside a large well-ventilated area, and we will follow MA DPH safety guidance. All participants must NOT have a COVID-19 infection or current symptoms of COVID-19 (fever/chills, persistent cough, difficulty breathing, fatigue, loss of taste or smell, etc.) This risk of contracting the COVID-19 virus can’t be fully mitigated, despite all reasonable measures taken. All participants must fully accept any consequences of their choice to participate in the event.
- General safety and risks: the event will have many clients, vendors, and staff, as well as tables, chairs, electric cords, stairs, and other hazards. All participants must understand that they participate in the event at their own risk; each individual is responsible for understanding their abilities and maintaining their own safety.
- The Cape and Islands Veterans Outreach Center and its partners are not responsible for any lost, stolen, or damaged items on our property or at our event.
- By submitting this registration and attending this event, all participants understand that the sole responsibility for their personal safety rests with themselves.
